Specification Terms

Dimensions
To indicate product sizes, Formica Limited uses these conventions:
• for sheet material: length, width and (where required) thickness are shown in millimetres.
• for shapes: key dimensions are shown in millimetres.

Finish
See 'Surface Finish'.

Flame-retardant
A product having enhanced fire performance.

General Purpose
A general purpose product is suitable for most normal (ie non-specialised) applications.

Grade
The grade of a laminate indicates the general performance characteristics of that laminate. These determine the purposes and applications for which the laminate product can be most appropriately used. The grade description indicates, among other things, whether the laminate is designed for vertical or horizontal application, whether it can be postformed, and whether it has flame-retardant qualities. For details of individual grade codings, see the 'Grades' heading under 'Properties / Performance' in the ‘Technical’ section.

Heavy Duty
More durable than general purpose products and intended for applications involving high levels of abrasion and impact.

Light Duty
Less durable than general purpose products and intended for applications involving low levels of abrasion and impact.

Product Availability
The standard surface finishes, grades and sheet sizes in which Formica® laminate products are manufactured.

Sample
A piece of laminate supplied to customers to give an indication of the colour, design, surface finish and other qualities of the actual product. We provide A5 size samples (210mm x 150mm), one sample per item up to a maximum of five separate items, while larger sizes can be prepared for special requirements.

Surface Finish
A general term describing the surface appearance, reflective quality and texture of a given Formica laminate, which may be plane (eg Matt or Gloss) or textured. Surface Finish is normally defined by a name, an abbreviation and a 2-digit reference code. For details of individual surface finish codings, see the 'Surface Finishes' heading under 'Properties / Data' in the ‘Technical’ section.

Surface Texture
This term is used to describe various laminate surface finishes that are not completely smooth to the touch. Depending on the application, some surface textures may be more suitable for use than others.

Swatch

Range swatches are no longer available, but individual laminate samples may be obtained through the Samples service.
